Make sure you are actually hashing this, and not encoding it. I haven't taken a look at your stack, but this should be trivial regardless. Normal users see the hash, admins see both. Store both the raw ip address and the generated hash, and tie the raw ip address behind a permission. What you could do is provide an IP address HASH that users could use to link accounts, but never the raw IP address. How to fix this and still provide the EXACT SAME functionality:Īs a software engineer I suggest a different approach when it comes to handling IP addresses. That should be for your admins only so that they can do their job, and for server admins on the server I play on. Just don't sell my IP address as part of this. If you want to run a patreon to pay for the service, go ahead. I would like to end this post by saying that they do provide a valuable resource to the BF4 community, and there is not an as developed competitor out there, because there isn't money to be made here (besides this patreon). The league of legends community has seen a similar tool to this that was used to retrieve the IP address of any summoner name so that you could DDOS them putting their team at a major disadvantage. Playing on a BF4 server shouldn't mean that any angsty teenager can look up your IP address by paying a service that claims to protect us, and then use one of a billion ddos services to hurt you. The issue at hand is that anyone, and I mean anyone, can go and get acceess to deanonymize you on almost every major BF4 server, and it's provided by a website designed to stop ABUSE without realizing how easily they enable it. That being said, they have the right to act however they want, and however childish that is isn't relevant to the issue at hand. They've stood behind this saying that because they deal with children constantly (this is true) that means it's fine for them to act like one as well. If you have any doubt, take a gaze at their forums, even just at the forum avatars that they use, it's all childish. It's a valuable tool for moderating Battlefield servers, but it is unfortunately ran by individuals who not only lack the maturity to provide proper oversight and restrictions to this information, but are also generally unwilling to. Putting something like this behind a patreon doesn't magically grant immunity.Īs your information is for sale, they are no longer able to claim that the reason they keep your information is to the sole benefit of improving their service or confidential to their service's integrity, therefore they must comply with GDPR requests for data removal for EU users.
